Already a division champion, state champion and team champion, Hopkinton sophomore Maddy Lane added some more hardware to her collection by winning the 3,200 meters crown at New Englands on Saturday.
Several area athletes competed, but Lane was the only one crowned as a champion at the New England Interscholastic Track and Field Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain, Conn.
Lane finished in 10 minutes, 32.66 seconds, taking the lead halfway through the first of eight laps with Teanne Ewings of Houlton, Maine, right behind. Ewings retook the lead about two-thirds of the way through the race, but Lane made a move with 300 meters to go and held off Ewings by .23 seconds for the victory.
Lane’s winning time was faster than the 10:41.2 that she ran at the Meet of Champions to win the New Hampshire title and well under the 10:53.7 she ran to claim the title in Division III.
Concord junior Grace Saysaw nearly won a couple of New England titles and broke two state records. Saysaw finished third in the 100 meters in 12.20 seconds and ran a 12.00 flat in the finals to finish second, breaking the state record of 12.01. Saysaw repeated the same feat in the afternoon 200 meters, finishing second in 24.29 seconds, under the 24.4 she ran to set the state record in mid-May.
Belmont junior Ava Lacasse finished 10th in the 100, just .007 seconds shy of the last spot in the finals (top nine qualified) and came in 12th in the 200.
Concord’s Consuelo Borico (11th shot put); Bow’s Julia Hou (12th pole vault), Camden Wilson (tied 12th high jump), Mackenzie Szczepanik (tied 19th pole vault) and Hannah Pawlowski (26th 800); Coe-Brown’s Bristol Shirland (12th 100 hurdles); Hopkinton’s Zoe Bishop (20th discus), Aisling Madden (20th 400) and Shaylee Murdough (27th 800); Kearsarge’s Ainsley Frenkiewich (24th long jump) and Juliet Faria (29th 200); and Merrimack Valley’s 4x400 relay (25th) of Jada Lucas, Sydney Spack, Madison Geddes and Lily Moser also competed.
Three other New Hampshire entries won New England titles - Bedford’s Ruby Kaupp in the pole vault (12 feet), Timberlane’s Danielle Bates in the high jump (5-7) and the Exeter girls’ 4x800 (9:09.87).
