Magdalen College of the Liberal Arts in Warner will close at the end of this academic year, the latest victim of declining post-secondary enrollment in New Hampshire, according to the state.
The school, which moved to Kearsarge Mountain Road in 1991 after two decades in Bedford, has about 60 students. It was founded in 1973 in response to calls from the Second Vatican Council for the laity to play a more prominent role in the church.
The New Hampshire Department of Education announced Saturday that the college would close in May, at the end of this academic year.
“As one of four Catholic colleges in New Hampshire, Magdalen served the region well while offering dynamic educational options,” the department said in a press release. The department will be the custodian of student transcripts once the school shuts.
This is the first college in New Hampshire to end operations since Daniel Webster College in Nashua closed in 2017.
