A man was hospitalized Friday after two police officers applied deadly force during an incident in Pelham.
Officers with the Pelham Police Department arrived on the scene after a 9-1-1 call reported a person “in mental distress” on Nashua Road, according to a press release from the attorney general’s office.
During the encounter, police say Sheldon Brockelbank, 33, fired a gun multiple times at officers. Two officers used deadly force, and as of Saturday evening, Brockelbank was still in the hospital but in stable condition.
No police officers were injured, and Brockelbank was charged with reckless conduct for firing his gun.
The Department of Justice is currently investigating the shooting and has not yet released the names of the officers involved.
Four other people have been shot by police in New Hampshire this year, one of whom died. The other incidents occurred in Derry, Londonderry, Dover and Keene.
Last year, police officers used deadly force nine times, with all but one incident resulting in a loss of life. So far, the attorney general’s office has ruled use of deadly force legally justified in every completed investigation of incidents from that timeframe.
The last time an officer was charged for their involvement in someone’s death was last February, when a former corrections officer was charged with second-degree murder for causing the death of an incarcerated person in 2023. Matthew Millar was accused of using his arms and/or legs to apply force and pressure to the chest and neck of a patient, causing deadly asphyxiation.
