It’s cool that you have a working rotary phone – but we don’t need to hear about it. Please!

Readers – enough with the rotary phones, already!

Last week we put a notice in the paper asking if anybody out there still used a dial telephone. We expected one or two responses, perhaps a small handful, for a nice little feature story.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. It turns out the Concord region has working dial phones of all types: princess phones; Snoopy phones; wall phones; desk phones; big, black phones that look like props from Dial M for Murder; fancy little phones that look like they belong in a boudoir. You name it and they’re still out there and still being used, often because the owner is too cheap to buy a replacement.

As of this writing, more than 50 people have reached out to tell us about their telephones, usually starting with a gleeful “I’m calling you from my rotary phone!” We’ve been slightly overwhelmed; if you left a message but Monitor reporter David Brooks hasn’t gotten back to you, our apologies; you may have been lost in the shuffle.

There will be a story coming out of all this in the next week or two, so if you’re a fan of dial phones, keep your eyes on the paper.

But don’t call us. Please.
