A very small earthquake hit Bow this week, but don’t be surprised if you didn’t notice it.

The United States Geological Survey says an earthquake with a magnitude of 1.9 was recorded just before midnight Wednesday, with the epicenter in Bow. Earthquakes less than 2 on standard scales of movement are rarely felt by people but can be registered on seismographs.

New England has relatively few earthquakes of any magnitude because we’re nowhere near the border of any continental plate or other major fault lines in the Earth’s crust.

According to the USGS, the two largest quakes in New Hampshire history occurred in 1940, centered in Ossipee. Both were measured at 5.9 on what was then the Richter scale.
