On Feb. 23, in a close competition with three peers from throughout the region, Deon Mendez of Pembroke earned the title 2017 Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Hampshire. Youth of the Year Candidates are chosen for outstanding contributions to the club and to the community. For the competition, they are required to present a speech and then interview with a panel of community members. This is the first year that the competition included representatives from the club’s three main branches in Concord, Suncook and the Lakes Region. Deon, a senior at Bishop Brady High School, has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for 11 years. He will be the first in his family to go to college, where he intends to study both psychology and law in the hope of helping children in circumstances like those he suffered as a youth.
