Letter: The making of the national debt

Published: 02-16-2024 2:34 PM

There are two types of national debt: intragovernmental and public. Intragrovernmental debt consists of the Federal Reserve (FDIC), Social Security and the VA. We all own the public debt: individual investors, institutions (banks), government employee pension obligations and foreign governments.

The national debt has become a ‘blame game’ debt limit standoff and is driving an ad war targeting politicians. The television ads stating that one individual or one group of individuals is responsible for the debt is ridiculous. With many separate entities responsible for the national debt no one person should be held responsible for the addition of the debt.
