Letter: Letter on voting

Recently I spoke about an experience I had with a woman who was forty-four years old, but had never voted. It was at a meeting of Bedford NH Democrats. Thanks to the Democrats for hosting the event, inviting one of our gubernatorial candidates, Cinde Warmington, and recognizing time for Q&A. The woman had shared with me that in the coming election process she knew what was at stake, but had felt embarrassed about never voting. She didn’t know what to do. “Will there be someone there to help me? How do I learn the truths about the candidates? What does a ballot even look like?” she asked. She’s been on the verge of not voting, yet knew she’d regret such inaction. This election must clearly be a process of education, not intimidation.

We know where that will lead us. We’ve seen it, when our nation’s capital was under siege, when a Portsmouth synagogue was desecrated, when children are bullied. What can be done so threats don’t become realities? NH has an opportunity to lead the nation in voter turnout, by making sure that all who are eligible are registered and voting, well informed and educated about our rights and responsibilities. Our kids deserve to see us engaging in a process that allows all of our voices to be heard, and our selections acknowledged. Your choices will matter in this election, and we are here to help you exercise them. Find your polling place. Go to voteinnh.org.
