I’m a cashier/bagger at Hannaford in Concord. On Thursday, I was just blown away by the generosity of a customer who came through my express lane.
I had just started my shift that morning when a man came to my lane to pay for his groceries. He used his debit card and asked for $25 cash back. I gave him the money, and he handed it back to me. He told me to put it toward the groceries of the man in line behind him and if there was any money left, to apply it to the groceries of the woman in line behind him.
I was shocked, but I explained what had just happened to the very nice older man who was next in line. He was so happy and a little in shock, I think, because at the end of the transaction he said to me, “What do I do now?” I said: I think, sir, just enjoy your groceries.
I’m not sure who the man was who paid for the groceries, but I’m sure he started a chain reaction of doing something nice for a complete stranger that day. It’s great to know there really are amazing people in our fast-paced, crazy, think-of-yourself world. I was proud to experience such generosity.
