My rationale for running for governor as the Libertarian nominee was both enhanced and clarified recently by my experience from the floor as one of New Hampshire’s 424 ill-yet-aptly-compensated legislators.
HB 1266 would have allowed firecrackers that are already sold in Maine and other states to be purchased in New Hampshire, saving the trip. Arguments given in Gov. Hassan’s veto and the 119 Democrats and a handful of Republicans who voted against it, all centered on the “use” of firecrackers, which is addressed by towns and cities, not the bill itself – ignoring the fact that consumers are already buying those firecrackers out of state.
New Democrats and RINOs previously appeared to be damaging our small business community out of spite or possibly some form of conspiracy – but now it seems that they are unaware that they are taxing, regulating, mandating, suing and fining our small-business community to death.
Even more worrisome was the applause and enthusiasm heard at the passage of “Operation Granite Hammer,” $1.5 million of additional police overtime to play Whack-a-mole with desperate smugglers.
As long as there is a demand, there will be suppliers.
The well-read “Old Left” within the Democratic Party is being replaced with emotional nanny staters and Wall Street warmongers. In the grand scheme of things, we are left to our own with a fiscally conservative, socially tolerant, freedom-loving third party of our own.
The Libertarian Party is the only surviving voice for returning money, power and decision-making back down to the local level.
