A judge reduced bail Friday for the man accused of breaking into the New Hampshire State House and damaging some portraits last month.

James Polito, 25, who has roots in the Granite State, was arrested in St. Cloud, Fla., last week and appeared in a Concord courtroom Thursday, but asked for a lawyer. As a result, his arraignment on burglary and criminal mischief charges was continued to Friday.

Polito’s bail had been set at $100,000, but Judge M. Kristin Spath reduced that amount to $20,000, or as she explained $10,000 on each charge. If released, Polito is prohibited from entering the capital building.

His attorney asked for personal recognizance bail, while noting that Polito has an extensive history of mental illness, including four hospitalizations. A prosecutor argued for significant cash bail.

State police said Polito broke into the State House in the early-morning hours of July 16. Police said no items were taken but damage was done to historic portraits that were removed during the burglary.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Aug. 12 at 8:30 a.m.
