Liz Howe and Don Williams explore themes of permanence and decay in a new exhibit at the Holderness School’s Edwards Art Gallery.
“Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture” contains vases, sculptures and sculptural portraits. Williams’s works have an aged quality due to use of finishes meant to mimic rusting and decay. Howe works on a grid and uses materials like newsprint and yarn to give a weathered appearance.
“Clay becomes one of the most permanent materials on Earth, once it is fired and is transformed into ceramic material,” said Franz Nicolay, director of the Edwards Art Gallery. “It is one way we learn about ancient civilizations. It’s not through their woodcarvings or weavings, which decay over time. It’s through ceramics.”
The exhibit will be on display until March 27. For more information, contact Nicolay at fnicolay@holderness.org or 630-2238.
