Sanbornton Old Home Day a success

The weather was perfect, turn-out happy and good. Sanbornton Old Home Day happened, thanks to many. We thank our townsfolk who came and enjoyed, our demonstrators of crafts/arts, storyteller Michael Lang, White Tiger Karate, Sant Bani School bus and driver, cake bakers providing us with slices for about 220 people! Ice cream scoopers get thanks – BB’s Scoops and Rock Salt Creamery. Who parked the lovely antique, gilt and red, fire truck at our Life Safety Building? Wonderful to see. Children at the Life Safety Building enjoyed touch-a-truck and their new fireman hats. Vendors – thank you for what you added. Sanbornton Historical Society members who made the pancake breakfast happen and the Lane Tavern tours – we thank you. Antique appraisers earned some funds (building needs new roof) for the historical society – Linda Tate and Catharine Farkas, aided by Dick Leclerc. Kathy Farrington designed our T-shirt that sold out this year, with the true and humorous motto “Sanbornton, Fighting Snow Since 1770.”

A bonus – we have a note from a Connecticut man who visited Lane Tavern. His great-great-great-grandfather was Charles Lane, who twice-owned the tavern! This visitor on Saturday thanks all who made him welcome.

A cribbage tournament report from Brad Crosby: A good time was had by the 14 players. Using an eight-game, singles, total point format, the top five players were awarded prizes. The winners were Marlene Cuthbertson with a score of 952, Scott Kelley with 938, Marcy Kelley with 935, Phyllis Day with 923, and Keith Belyea with 913. Thank you to all participants, the American Legion Post 49 of Tilton for use of the tournament equipment; also Ciao Pasta restaurant, Sanbornton General Store, Dipsy Doodle Dairy Bar, Tom Kuhner Silversmith, and Steve and Karen Ober for their very generous gift donations.

The parade topped the day, with Jean Auger and Starlin Morrison at the front, childhood friends who grew up on Hale Road, and now our respected elders. Moulton Band played, lively. Bill and Faith Tobin’s family pulled their N.H. State Seal replica float with the addition of “Maxine” (that comic woman, formatted now as a dummy) surrounded by the four seasons – our parade theme. A whole lot of work there – we are appreciative, Tobins!

Swain Farm also loaded in the special animal pets for their big wagonload of family, pulled by a tractor. We are a farming community, still. Tobey and Bodhi Shoemaker along with Nancy Mangion walked in praise of bees.

More could be said. Anyone with good photos – please get them to us! What about that Selectman John Olmstead sitting with Balloon Burst Booth (thank you to Franklin Savings Bank for that loan) and getting wet over and over again?
