Built in 1765, the Winthrop Carter House is one of the oldest and most continuously operating inns in New Hampshire.
The historic building sits in the middle of Boscawen’s main thoroughfare, High Street, a short walk from the Congregational Church, which serves as the town hall.
The original owner, Revolutionary War Lieutenant Winthrop Carter, became an innkeeper in 1790.
The building has also been known as the Old Homestead Inn and Tea Room and the Kettle and Crane Restaurant and Inn.
The building and barn were bought by Katy and Colm Brophy in 2014, who had run the Longlook Farm wedding venue in Sanbornton. They renovated the property and have been hosting weddings ever since.
Inside the main house are several guest rooms where the bride and groom, bridal party and family can spend the night and get ready in the morning. The décor evokes the inn’s historic roots.
In warmer months, there’s an outdoor ceremony area on the 22-acre property. Then, the party moves inside the barn – lit by chandeliers and bistro bulbs – for a reception.
