A recent report by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change urges governments to take “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society” to avoid disastrous levels of global warming. Here in New Hampshire climate change is evidenced in coastal flooding in the Seacoast, more damage to roads with frequent freeze/thaw cycles, and a rise in more extreme weather events. The use of fossil fuels is one of the major causes of global warming. Fortunately for residents of Concord there is a strategic plan being developed to transition from the use of fossil fuels and bring the city to 100% renewable energy.
The Concord Energy and Environment Committee is holding public input sessions regarding the Ready for 100% Renewable Energy Strategic Plan. This ambitious plan has the goal of 100% renewable electric energy by 2030. Transportation and heating renewable energy goals are set for 2050. These goals are set for the entire city. The next input session is Saturday, May 4, at the Penacook Community Center from 2 to 4 p.m. Another session is Monday, May 6, at the City Council Chambers from 6 to 8 p.m.
I urge Concord residents to attend one of these sessions and find out more about how the city of Concord is committed to addressing the issue of climate change.
