Pete Buttigieg, the South Bend, Ind., mayor and Democratic presidential hopeful, made a morning swing through Concord on Saturday, part of a two-day tour through the state.
He walked the city’s farmers’ market, pausing for dog photos, voters’ questions and to visit farm stands. He addressed a crowd of more than 100 people at a house party on Ridgewood Lane, steering clear of detailed policy pronouncements but pitching a vision of reclaiming values traditionally seen as “the property of one side or another.” Freedom does not always mean freedom from government, Buttigieg argued, but can include health care and equal marriage rights. “What better place is a state that lives by the idea of ‘Live Free or Die?’ ” he said. “Freedom is a bipartisan commitment and our side is ready to deliver on the freedoms that are given and find the balance in the center.”
