Platforms, stilettos and kitten heels took to Concord’s Main Street on Wednesday for the annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes to support the region’s crisis center.
While the event asks men to literally walk 1 mile in women’s high-heeled shoes, the Crisis Center of New Hampshire’s annual fundraiser is for everyone. Men, women and families participated in the event, which takes place at different locations throughout the country and helps kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Some participants walked on their own, while others entered as a team.
The thousands of dollars raised each year help support the work of the crisis center, which has served victims of domestic and sexual violence in Merrimack County for four decades. Through advocacy, empowerment, education and collaboration, the crisis center is working to end sexual and domestic violence and to empower survivors. It is one of 13 centers in the Granite State that operates under the umbrella of the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, which is also based in Concord.
The Crisis Center of Central New Hampshire served 1,184 people, answered 4,950 hotline calls and provided 2,991 bed nights in the emergency shelter in 2017.
If you or someone you know has experienced sexual or domestic violence, advocates are available 24/7 to provide free and confidential support through the crisis center’s hotline at 1-866-841-6229. You do not have to be in crisis to reach out.
