A snowblower mounted in front of the engine will let the Mount Washington Cog Railway keep running all winter for the first time.
The historic train usually stops its trips up the west side of Mount Washington in December, but this will have weekend and holiday excursions all winter. Because the Mount Washington Observatory on the peak is closed in winter, the train will stop at Waumbek Station at about 4,000 feet elevation, where there are โwarming huts, complimentary hot refreshments, snacks, and a blazing fire pit,โ said the railway in a statement.
The buildings at Waumbek Station have long been a stop for some Cog Railway trips. When the train ran ski trips in recent years, that is where skiers unloaded and began their runs.
Passenger coaches will be heated, and the one-hour trip is narrated by an onboard brakeman. Online reservations are strongly recommended.
The run begins at Marshfield Base Station. This year, a groomed extension was made, linking it to the existing network of hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails. It is open all winter with a food court, gift shop, and free Cog Railway Museum.
The cost is $41 for adults and $29 for ages 4 to 12.
