The City Council voted to reject permanently recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day alongside Columbus Day each year at its Monday meeting. But some members of the council and city officials had differing views Wednesday about what occurred.
Mayor Rick Becksted said Wednesday morning he believed the council had approved the addition of Indigenous Peoples Day to the city calendar. However, according to city documents from the meeting, which were confirmed by city attorney Robert Sullivan, the council actually voted to reject the new holiday after a series of amendments and votes.
