In the context of the life and purpose of Dr. Martin Luther King, I too have a dream. Mine is much more modest, but it is of the same purpose. My dream is that during the coming mid-term elections we citizens of the U.S. will come to grips with the danger to our democracy and constitution and in spite of the obstacles thrown up by elements of our state and federal governments Americans will turn out in overwhelming numbers and vote to remove from office those who would trade democracy for political power and an authoritarian government.
Think! That was not what our founding fathers and mothers envisioned. As Dr. King warned, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” To paraphrase Wangari Maathai, the founder of the Green Belt Movement: “Human rights (e.g. voting) are not things that are put on the table for people to enjoy. These are things you fight for and then you protect.” (FYI, The Green Belt Movement plants trees all over the world.)
