■Attention Voters! May 31 is the final day to change your party’s affiliation for the Sept. 13 State Primary Election. Supervisors of the Checklist will be meeting on May 31 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You may register to vote or change your party’s affiliation at that time. Documents needed to vote include proof of identity with photo ID, proof of residency and proof of citizenship with a birth certificate or naturalization papers. For questions – call (603) 753-9188.

■May 31 is the deadline for filing for state representative for the Republican or Democratic primaries or delegate to the Republican State Convention. To check on your voting status, go to sos.nh.gov.

■A free coffee social is held at the Horace Chase Lodge every Monday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Join them for coffee, conversation and games and learn about the many reasons to join the Masons of the Lodge, and the Priscilla Chapter 51 of the Eastern Star.

■Another opportunity to learn about Composing will be held at the Boscawen Public Library on June 14, starting at 6:30 p.m. The presentation explains what it is and why it is important. Other topics covered are what materials are needed and the many different methods for constructing an individual pile including what works best for yours. The workshop is geared toward both beginners and experienced composters.

CANTERBURYMemorial remembrance

■Memorial Day. Let us remember, and honor, those warriors who have died in combat protecting each other and helping to preserve our way of life here in Canterbury. Our Memorial Day Observance will be on May 30 at the bandstand in the center. It will begin at 10 a.m. with a parade down the hill from the elementary school to the bandstand in the center. Participants should assemble at the school by 9:45 p.m. Local historian, Mark Stevens, will deliver the address. USMC Captain and Vietnam veteran Dale Caswell will officiate. Veterans in uniform, BDU’s or civilian dress are especially encouraged to join 4H, Scouts, town groups, selectmen, legislators, fire and police, and our own Belmont High School Band under the direction of Lauren Fountain.

■On June 13, the CES PTO will host a playground party at 3:30 p.m. We will also unveil the new Canterbury Community Playground sign at 4:30 p.m. All are welcome! A special thank you to the town of Canterbury and Shaker Regional School District for coming together to sponsor the new sign, as well as to local artist Jayne Hastings for her work in creating a beautiful design that encompasses our learners’ visions!

■The Planning Board, other commissions in town and the staff of the Central New Hampshire Regional Planning Commission are working to update the 2010 Master Plan, also known as the Plan for Tomorrow. This work was disrupted by the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. If you would like to know more, or want to share views and aspirations for the future of the town, please join the Board and NHRPC on June 18, between 10 a.m. to noon, in the Town Center buildings. Refreshments will be available.

■Seasonal help is needed for mowing cemeteries and other town property for $20 per hour. Must be at least 16 years old. There is a full job description available on the Canterbury Town Website – Canterbury-nh.org. Or contact the Canterbury Town Office at (603) 783-9955.

■The Supervisors of the Checklist will be in session at the Canterbury Town Office, Sam Lake House, Hackleboro Road from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on May 31 to make additions and corrections to the checklist. In addition to registering new voters, this will be the last time for voters already registered to change or declare a party affiliation before the state primary election (Sept. 13).

■Community Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by the CUCC on June 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Dinner includes spaghetti, sauce, meatballs, bread, dessert, and a beverage.

■Adults are $10; children five to 12 are $5; children under four years are free. Families (up to four people) are $25. Games are available outside for the young and young at heart! Come and enjoy a delicious dinner and spend time with your Canterbury neighbors! All are welcome!

■Elkins Public Library will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on May 30.

■The Old Man Boring Book Club will meet on June 9 at 6 p.m. This group of interesting men and women brings titles to share and discuss. This is one of our largest programs.

■Elkins Public Library Speakers Series on June 7 at 7 p.m. Join us as Elkins Public Library teams up with Canterbury Historical Society for a program about Canterbury Shaker Village in the Town Hall. This special program will detail current and future plans for Canterbury’s Shaker Village. Executive Director Leslie Nolan will lead a presentation incorporating the many plans, programs and projects currently underway or in development at the Village. Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be served.

■The Town of Salisbury’s Board of Selectmen has started planning for the creation of a Highway Department and is actively searching for a property to house these town services. ■KLS Food Pantry, serving multiple towns including Salisbury and Andover, food distribution hours are on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at The First Baptist Church. They also take donations and are a 501 3c nonprofit organization.

■The Friends of Forgotten Children food pantry has opened the building to its clients. The pantry is open on Thursdays, from 9 to 11 a.m., closed for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to noon and reopens for clients from noon to 7 p.m. First-time clients should bring proof of residency for each member of the household. This can be your lease, a utility bill, food stamp or other agency approvals, or doctor bills. We also have a clothing pantry. ■The Town Clerk will be closed on May 30 for Memorial Day. There will be extra hours on June 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.

■The Town Hall and the Library will be closed on May 30 for Memorial Day.

■A Plant Swap is being planned for June 4 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pillsbury Lake Village District Clubhouse. Because of the concern about the Asian Jumping Worm, please bring your swaps after you wash the root system thoroughly. The eggs can survive on the roots if they are not washed. Bare root plants only, please.

■The Webster Conservation Commission invites you to join them for a Paddle on Walker Pond on June 5 at 9 a.m. We will meet on Long Street at the put-in. Bring your kayaks or canoes, hats, and bug protection. Please look for a rain date the following week should the weather be soggy. 

■The Webster Gardeners is a group of friendly people who enjoy gardening and everyone is welcome to attend any of the events. You do not need to be an expert, just someone who likes to go outside and putter in the garden.

■The Webster Fire Department reminds everyone to number their mailboxes to make it easier for the fire department or emergency response people to find you faster. Many times people come from other towns to an emergency in Webster. Response time is important in an emergency. Numbers should be visible from the street and on both sides of the mailbox.
