It’s time to call out Governor Sununu and Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut on the school voucher program that they claim is a way to help students get the educational choices that otherwise might not be available to them. But that isn’t what is happening, according to AmplifyNH, School Fairness Funding Project and Reaching Higher NH.
Almost 90% of the students using the voucher program were already in either private schools or being home schooled. Of the 1,800 students using the vouchers, only 204 came from public schools. The school voucher program is currently costing taxpayers $8 million and could be up to $70 million in three years. New Hampshire ranks absolutely last in the U.S. in the funding we give to our public schools. Mark Twain said, “Out of the public school grows the greatness of the nation”. Perhaps we should be giving our tax dollars to our public schools instead of our private schools.
