A logging truck trying to turn right on North State Street from Hutchins Street broke a utility pole Tuesday morning and spilled more than a dozen pine logs on the road, snarling traffic for hours.
Nobody was injured in the accident, which happened about 9 a.m.
According to eye witnesses, a truck from Varney & Sons Logging pulling two tri-axle, fixed-frame trailers full of logs came down the hill on Hutchins Street, going east, after passing a city crew picking up leaves from gutters, and took the sharp right turn onto State Street alongside West Congregational Church.
The truck clipped the utility pole on the corner, breaking it off and causing about half the center load of 20-foot pine logs, some two feet in diameter, to spill onto North State Street.
The driver declined to be interviewed. The incident is still under investigation.
Traffic was rerouted most of the morning while logging equipment was brought in to clean up the mess.
The logs were still on the road near the intersection with Hutchins Street as of 10:30 a.m. while emergency crews responded.
A portion of the truck, which was still at the scene, appeared to have snapped, causing the logs to fall out.
