A pickup truck caught fire on Interstate 93 in Canterbury Monday night, shutting down the highway for about 45 minutes.

A truck was traveling south on the highway about 7 p.m. when it came to a stop in the left lane and caught fire, Canterbury fire Chief Peter Angwin said. The cause of the accident was unknown as of Tuesday morning.

“We really don’t know,” he said. “The driver didn’t remember either.”

The driver may have been ejected from the vehicle, but Angwin could not confirm whether this happened. The driver was transported to Concord Hospital, but his status was unknown on Tuesday.

The accident happened north of Exit 18.

Angwin said the accident is under investigation by the New Hampshire State Police. A state police lieutenant did not return a call Tuesday.
