Decland Perkins’ paint-smeared face was all smiles when it was his turn to play tug-of-war.

“This is really fun,” the third-grader said under sunny skies. “And my favorite thing is tug-of-war.”

Perkins and his peers shared laughter, fun and games Tuesday when Beaver Meadow elementary school hosted its first all-day field day in recent history. Kindergarten through fifth grade participated in potato sack races, water games, pickleball and pool-noodle baseball, among other activities.

“It’s been fabulous,” said Michele Cernuda, a third-grade teacher at BMS. “The whole school is coming together and bonding over cooperative games and teamwork.”

The leader of the day was physical education teacher Kevin Parsons, who began planning for the event at the beginning of the year alongside his coworkers and students.

“We’ve had field day pretty much every year, but we’ve always wanted a full-day field day – something I’ve been building up towards,” he said. “We created a committee at the beginning of the year to start planning and talking about the different ideas and stuff that goes into field day. I’ve had an awesome team with me to help plan.”

Despite successfully staying in person throughout the 2021-22 school year, many large events that BMS put on before the pandemic had to be pushed. But the full-scale field day marked a new world of post-pandemic schooling for all of the students at Beaver Meadow.

“Coming back to school this year in person has been amazing, but actually coming together to be able to do school-wide events feels like a gift that we can cherish because we haven’t been able to do certain things in the last couple years,” said principal Michele Vance.

Other staff members and volunteers noted the significance of the event for their students.

“It’s a return to the sense of normalcy – we haven’t done this in many years. And I’ve seen so much teamwork from the kids today, which has been a great experience,” said Mindy Perrotta, an instructional assistant. “It’s been a crazy year, so it’s good to have this fun way to end it.”

The success of Tuesday’s event was encapsulated by its “fantastic energy,” Vance said.

“I’ve been here for six years and this is the first time we’ve done a full day field day, so this is kind of epic for us,” she said. “We have lots of traditions, and I think this will become an annual one here at Beaver Meadow School.”

School ends for the term on Thursday.
