Question of the week: What were the 1980s really like?

THE 1980s ARE BACK, thanks in large part to the popularity of the Netflix series Stranger Things. That means kids born in the 21st century are asking questions – sorry, Googling questions – about New Coke, cassette tapes, Miami Vice and Alex P. Keaton. But decades are always significantly more complicated than the popular culture that defines them, an obvious fact that somehow loses its clarity as years go by. So let’s try to use our collective memory to paint a more accurate picture of the 1980s for those who were born in its wake. Our question of the week is this: What would you say to someone who asked what the 1980s were really like? Email your response by noon on Tuesday, July 16, to letters@cmonitor.com. Please keep it between 150 and 400 words, and include an address and phone number for verification. We’ll run a selection in next Thursday’s Forum section.
