Those looking for a Blizzard this Memorial Day weekend are out of luck, as the Concord Dairy Queen is closed to customers.

The Loudon Road location is listed as “temporarily closed” on the company’s website, though a sign on the business’s front entrance says it will be reopening soon. A Google search reveals the property is for sale as part of a package that includes 192 to 196 Loudon Road, where Entertainment Cinema and a branch location of Movie Gallery once lived.

It’s a startling turn for one of the most-hyped restaurant developments in Concord a few years ago.

People flocked to the ice cream chain on its opening day in the summer of 2017, with Twitter user Adrian Bolte noting on DQ’s first Saturday night: “I think there are more people at the new Dairy Queen in Concord than there are people at the Steeplegate Mall.”

And old-timers who remembered when Dairy Queen’s first appeared on Loudon Road rejoiced at the chance to get chocolate-dipped soft served ice cream once again.

There was speculation on whether the development would threaten local ice cream institution Arnie’s, whose chicken sales took a hit when Kentucky Fried Chicken moved up the street.

But unless someone buys Dairy Queen, it seems Loudon Road’s local chains will have the last laugh.

Arnie’s won’t be alone for long, however. True Confections & Gifts is planning to open its new location on 211 Loudon Road on June 23.

The candy store is leaving its home of 27 years at the Steeplegate Mall, citing declining foot traffic and what its owner said was an unwillingness to negotiate a lower rent rate from mall owners Namdar Realty Group.

His new place will offer soft scoop ice cream.
