Everyone deserves to know what’s happening in their community. It’s this critical flow of information that allows us to connect and work together to find solutions to some of our most pressing challenges.

Like any good newsroom, the Concord Monitor holds the powerful accountable. We reflect what is happening in the community and we uncover information the public deserves to know. We tell stories of sadness, joy, struggle and triumph. These are the community’s stories that everyone deserves to see and read.

Now, we need the help of our loyal readers to make this work available to the people who may need it most.

This week, the Monitor is launching a program to get full-access digital subscriptions in the hands of people and families who want one but just can’t afford it.

To meet this growing need, we developed News for Your Neighbor, a program that involves you, our readers, a corporate sponsor and, for now, at least three nonprofit organizations that will help us spread the news as far and wide as we can.

It’ll work like this. Our nonprofit partners have identified individuals and families that will most benefit from having full digital access to the Concord Monitor. Our readers give a $100 donation to buy a digital subscription for someone in need. Our corporate sponsor matches the first 25 subscriptions, so your contribution is doubled. The Monitor will reinvest the money it receives into a new reporting beat to enhance our coverage and become better able to serve our readers.

About the program

As the daily news source in the Capital Region since 1864, the Monitor has long prided itself on following the issues most critical to our readers and our state. Last year, we added a new beat to our newsroom, in partnership with Report for America, called Two New Hampshires.

The Granite State is touted for its high income, great schools and low cost of living. That’s all true, but it’s not the case for everyone. There is a significant part of our population that struggles to keep up. So we started reporting more deeply on those topics.

We wrote about the hardships patients and their families face in the state due to a staffing shortage for mental health services. We wrote about new Americans who, when faced with low wages, limited options, and increased housing costs, are looking to leave the state to find better opportunities elsewhere. And we wrote about a transitional living program that’s helping young adults impacted by homelessness by offering them housing stability.

As we built this coverage into the newsroom, we brought the stories of those underserved and underrepresented communities to light, looked for solutions, and aimed to connect people to both resources and understanding. But in doing so, we found a gap — the people we’re meeting and whose stories we’re sharing might not have regular access to the Monitor.

Why is this so important? Information is power, and far too often those who are working hard to keep up are left out of the conversation. We don’t want access to information to be a luxury only for those who can afford it.

That’s why we’re launching News for Your Neighbor, a new donation-based program to get people connected to their communities through a digital subscription to the Concord Monitor.

We hope this program will offer you, our loyal and longtime readers, the chance to give more and help others in your town or city become subscribers by purchasing a one-year digital subscription as a gift for a local person or family.

How does it work?

Each digital subscription purchased ($100 for one subscription) will be gifted to a local family or individual chosen by one of our partner nonprofits. Second Start, Family Promise and Overcomers Refugee Services have joined the program as our non-profit partners. They will identify the families or individuals that would be best-served by a year-long digital subscription.

McLane Middleton has joined News for Your Neighbor as our corporate partner. They will match the first 25 donations, so when you give, your donation will be funding two gift subscriptions.

The Monitor will continue to provide reporting that is valuable to its communities as well as provide administrative support to this new program and a discounted rate on these subscriptions. Community donations from you, our readers, ensure that this initiative is sustainable so that the Monitor can continue to invest in its newsroom while reaching those who need it.

By donating to News for Your Neighbor, you can help us grow our subscriber base and build a more informed community.

What does it mean to reinvest the revenue from this program back into our newsroom? When you purchase a gift subscription, not only will a local family get access to the Concord Monitor,

but you’ll help us increase our ability to reach people by funding a new reporter.

We want to amplify the work we do through reporting, hosting programs and developing new technologies that provide the best user experience, all to get more information into the hands of readers.

If you donate to the program, we’d love to recognize you by name, in print and online, to say thank you. But if you’d prefer to donate and remain anonymous, you can.

As this program grows, we hope to spread the news far and wide, literally.
