Maine elected its first female governor on Tuesday.
Attorney general Janet Mills, a Democrat, was leading Republican Shawn Moody, 51 percent to 43 percent with two-thirds of the state’s precincts reporting. Independent candidate Terry Hayes drew about 6 percent of the vote.
Mills will replace controversial Republican Paul LePage. Mills has been the state’s attorney general for six years, and has often clashed with LePage and his conservative agenda.
