Letter: Abolish the death penalty

Published: 1/25/2019 12:00:51 AM

I am writing to add my voice to the many others who believe it is time for New Hampshire to join the states and nations that have abolished the death penalty.

The experience of those places should put to rest the unfounded fear that such abolition necessarily leads to an increase in violent crime. The evidence is in. Let’s act on it.

I would add a personal note. More than 40 years ago I heard a top government official announce publicly that he now knew a man whose death sentence he had refused to commute had in fact been innocent of any crime. I have never forgotten the anguish of that official. I am sure he lived all the rest of his life with that knowledge on his mind, as have I.
