Letter: Show some respect for your constituents

To Rep. Gary Hopper: Last Wednesday a committee you serve on took up four bills designed to limit access to reproductive rights. I’m a constituent of yours and was one of the women dressed as a Handmaid outside of Representatives Hall. You took a photo and posted it on Facebook, clearly mocking us. Many of your supporters, including another one of my reps, joined in the fun. A woman who writes for the Granite Grok took a second photo and kept the mockery going.

This is a serious issue. There are those in this country, including the current resident of the White House, who want to roll back women’s rights. I don’t wear the Handmaid’s costume as a joke. I, along with many others, wear it as a warning. If things keep going the way they are, there is a terrifying possibility that the land of the free could become the oppressive, theocratic world of Margaret Atwood’s Gilead.

If you want to decrease the number of abortions in this country, passing laws that take away women’s rights is not the answer. Studies show that comprehensive sex education and affordable long-term contraception are the major factors that reduce the need for abortion. Passing laws will not put an end to abortion, only to safe abortion.

I suggest you do a little research. And while you’re at it, think about having a little respect for the folks you are supposed to represent.
