CANTERBURY — Police say they recovered the bodies of two people who drowned Saturday night in the Merrimack River.

Divers found a 27-year-old woman and a 21-year old man around 8:30 Sunday morning.

Both were part of a group of four people who were in the water Saturday evening near Pebble Beach in Canterbury, according to a state police news release.

The two began struggling and, despite others’ attempts to help, went underwater and didn’t resurface. Marine Patrol received a call about the incident around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, resulting in a search involving multiple agencies and fire departments.

The victims’ names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, and the incident remains under investigation, according to the release.
