University of New Hampshire alum and Bedford High graduate Josh Bauer was selected by Atlanta United FC in the second round (31st overall) of the 2021 Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Thursday afternoon.

Bauer, a defenseman, was the most decorated soccer player in UNH history when he finished his collegiate career in 2019. He was the first Wildcat to be named First Team All-American when he earned the honor in 2019, the same year he became the first ’Cat to be a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is given annually to the most outstanding college soccer player in the country.

Bauer was also Second Team All-American in 2018. And he had a slew of honors he earned in both 2018 and ’19 – a First Team All-Northeast Region, ECAC Defender of the Year, America East Defender of the Year, America East Tournament MVP, All-America East and First Team ECAC. And in 2019,  Bauer was one of only three student-athletes around the nation to earn First Team All-America and First Ream Scholar All-America honors.

Most importantly, UNH went 40-10-10 during Bauer’s three years at the school and the Wildcats made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history.

“We are very proud of Josh and his development in our program,” UNH head coach Marc Hubbard said. “From representing his home state to helping us win conference championships in the most successful three-year period in program history, we know Josh is ready for this opportunity. We are all very excited to track his progress, and Atlanta United FC is not only getting a great player but a person of high character and work rate. He has definitely left the jersey in a much better place than when he had arrived.”

After the UNH’s 2020 season was postponed due to COVID-19, Bauer signed with Birmingham Legion of the United Soccer League Championship and appeared in three games.

Bauer is now the second Wildcat to be drafted by an MLS team and the fourth to be a part of an MLS organization. Chris Wingate was drafted by New York City Football Club in the third round of the 2017 draft (54th overall). Travis Worra signed with D.C. United in February of 2015 and appeared in 19 games during his four years with the team, and Dan Sirota, who graduated from UNH in 2000,  was a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2002.
