Good writing is an art that requires constant practice and unbiased feedback. If you’ve been searching for a writers group that offers you the support you need, you’re in luck, because the Concord Writers Group is open to new members. Anyone who enjoys writing and would like to improve their skills by learning from others is invited to join up.

This pier-support group was organized about 1986, with the objective to encourage and motivate writers and to offer constructive feedback on their writing. The group also keeps each other informed of upcoming seminars, readings, contests and other activities of interest to writers. Meetings are held at the Concord Public Library on the first and third Saturdays of each month, September through May.

“I’ve been a member of the group for nearly 30 years, and during that time, we’ve had writers in all genres. Right now, we have some who are working on short stories, science fiction novels, poetry, non-fiction and historical pieces,” said Barbara Lassonde, co-chairwoman of the group.

Chris Weeden has co-chaired the meetings with Lassonde for about 25 years, and together they have kept the group flourishing. There are currently nine members, with openings for a few more.

Most of the group’s current members are published and several have authored books. Some write regularly for newspapers and a couple have received awards for their work.

“We don’t ask our members to write on any particular topic, they can submit whatever they wish. The only monetary fee is that we ask everyone to donate one dollar per meeting, which goes toward purchasing books for the library,” Lassonde said. “This is a very supportive group, and anyone who’s looking for this type of help with their writing is welcome to join us.”

The next meeting of the Concord Writers Group will be held Feb. 17 in the Shakespeare Room of the Concord Public Library at 10 a.m. Those wishing for more information may call Chris at 224-1715 or Barbara at 456-6052.
