Seven different players scored for Coe-Brown, including senior attacker Gil Bean who notched his 100th point of the season, in a 13-3 Division III boys’ lacrosse win over Bow on Tuesday.
“It was good because I didn’t really have all four seasons to do it – was kind of just like the last two seasons,” said Bean, who had a goal and an assist. “And last year, I got injured, so my season got cut short.”
The win cemented the Bears’ claim to the first seed in the upcoming D-III tournament. For head coach Tony DePalma, however, it’s all about the next game.
In the past few years, the No. 1 seed has struggled in the playoffs and fallen in the semifinals or earlier. On top of that, DePalma is still searching for his first playoff win with the program, so the undefeated regular season is great — but not everything.
“Ultimately, we know we control our own destiny with regards to if we play the way we’re capable of playing. I feel confident we can run with anybody and beat anybody. So that’s really where the focus has been,” DePalma said.
The clash between D-III’s top two teams was bound to be tough, but Bow’s slow start on senior night led to a 4-0 deficit in the first quarter. The Falcons struggled to come back after that.
For the Bears (13-0), the No. 1 seed was theirs to keep if they could pull away with a win at Bow with only one more regular-season game remaining.
On the other hand, the Falcons (11-1) had Plymouth (11-2) and Hopkinton (10-2) hot on their tails going into this must-win game to secure the second seed, with a slim chance at the first seed.

The Falcons are still in the upper bracket of contention and had shown a strong defense all season until this game. The 13 goals they allowed were the most of any game, and the three goals scored were the least since their first loss of the season to Campbell.
Bow coach Devin Calkins understands the task ahead for his group, and the boys know it too. “We’re going to do everything better. Everything better. Nothing we did today worked,” Calkins said.
“We switch it up, and we just have to show a higher competitive level, but I didn’t really feel like we entered the fight at any point in the game today,” he added.
Both teams play ConVal to end their seasons. The Falcons tackled the Cougars on Wednesday evening; the Bears get their crack on Saturday.
