D-I Girls’ Basketball

No. 1 Bishop Guertin 66, No. 9 Concord 48

Key players: Concord – Whitney Vaillant (14 points, 5 steals), Aidah Smalley (13 points, 2 steals, 4 rebounds), Delaney Duford (9 points, 3 steals) Sofia Payne (6 points, 8 rebounds)

Highlights: The Tide hit four 3s in the opening quarter to take a 22-16 lead and Concord held top-seeded BG to a 29-29 tie at halftime, but the Cardinals pulled away in the second half to survive a potential upset in the Division I quarterfinals. BG led 46-38 heading into the final eight minutes of the game, and the Tide still had the energy and effort needed, but couldn’t finish at the rim consistently.

Coach’s quote: “We came into this game with nobody really giving us a chance to win, so our game plan was to put it all out there and play with nothing to lose and that’s exactly what they did. The score doesn’t reflect how this game went for 32 minutes. I am proud of them, how they played this game and how they really grew this year. How we all grew, even myself.” – Concord’s Rob Darrell

Records: Bishop Guertin 19-0; Concord 11-9
