A Loudon man died after a two-vehicle crash in Concord on Sunday, closing a portion off the highway for three hours while rescuers tended to the wounded and cleared the wreckage from the road.

Curtis Avery, 69, of Loudon, was transported to the hospital in critical condition after the crash on Interstate 89 South near Exit 2 in Concord and was later pronounced dead due to his injuries.

Avery was driving an orange 1979 Volkswagen Bus around 1:45 p.m. when traffic slowed to a stop due to Sunday afternoon congestion. His vehicle collided into the back of a white 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, according to New Hampshire State Police.

The Volkswagen bus, with itโ€™s flat windshield and rear-mounted engine, sustained extensive front-end damage, police said.

State police from the Troop D barracks in Concord arrived at the scene at 1:51 p.m. Members of the Concord Fire Department arrived to free Avery from the wreck. The driver of the Sprinter van was transported to the hospital for a precautionary evaluation. State Police have not yet disclosed the identity of that driver.
