Smoking a cigarette, Elijah Allman, the 49-year-old son of Cher and the late Gregg Allman, slipped into the St. Paul’s School dining hall Friday night just as some students were leaving.
Several leery students at the private Concord boarding school followed him inside the building. He became annoyed and poked one with his cane, Rector Kathy Giles said in an email sent to parents.
“Faculty members alerted to this situation immediately intervened and engaged Mr. Allman, who pushed one faculty member with his cane before our safety officer physically removed him from the building,” Giles wrote.
Allman was arrested by Concord Police at approximately 6:51 p.m. on simple assault, criminal mischief and criminal trespassing charges.
It wasn’t his last encounter with New Hampshire police over the weekend.
The bizarre sequence that began at St. Paul’s School ended at a private residence in Windham on Sunday, where Allman was arrested again.
Allman arrived at St. Paul’s School in a car “driven by another person whom police questioned but did not detain and who left campus immediately in their vehicle,” Giles said.
The campus is not gated and is accessible to the community from Pleasant Street.
The disturbance at St. Paul’s School unfolded during a busy evening, as St. Paul’s hosted a playoff ice hockey game, a winter dance and music performances. The events brought an unusually large number of visitors onto the campus, many of whom students did not recognize.
After faculty and campus safety officers were alerted to the disruption in the dining hall and removed Allman from the building, they called Concord Police.
Allman had no previous affiliation with the school but identified himself as a prospective parent, the school said.
โHe was belligerent toward our adults and the police officers,โ Giles wrote in her message to parents, which went on to offer a measure of reassurance. “While this event was serious, it would not have garnered media attention if it were not for Mr. Allmanโs celebrity status.”
School officials said they plan to refresh training and reinforce messaging regarding campus visitor protocols in the aftermath of the incident.
Allman, who is from Malibu, CA., is facing two counts of simple assault, criminal trespass and criminal threatening, all misdemeanors, and a violation of disorderly conduct. Then, they released him on personal recognizance bail.
At around 9:47 a.m. on Sunday, officers with the Windham Police Department responded to Ministerial Road after receiving a report of someone breaking into a residence through the back door.
The person who called 911 call told dispatchers they were hiding in a closet while the suspect remained inside the residence, court documents show.
When officers arrived, they observed that a glass pane in the rear door had been shattered, with broken glass scattered both outside and inside the home.
When they entered, police found Allman, โseated on the living room couch, smoking a cigarette.โ They placed him in handcuffs and took him into custody without any incident.
Allman told officers that the homeowner had given him permission โto enter the residence and break the door,โ according to court records.
Police said nothing appeared to be missing from the home, but there was a fresh cigarette burn on a living room area rug. The cost of the property damage is estimated to be $1,000.
Windham police charged Allman with burglary, breach of bail, one count of Class A misdemeanor criminal mischief, and one count of Class B felony criminal mischief.
Facing multiple charges, Allman will be arraigned on April 20 at Concord District Court and March 11 at Salem District Court.
