OUR ENVIRONMENT NEEDS MORE LOCAL REPORTING
The Concord Monitor is launching its Environmental Reporting Lab, a long-term effort to better inform the community about the New Hampshire environment. To launch phase 1 of this effort, we need your help. The money raised will go toward hiring a full-time environmental reporter.

Re “N.H. Senate supports creation of protest buffer zone around abortion clinics” (Monitor front page, Feb. 20):
We applaud the New Hampshire Senate for approving a 25-foot buffer zone around abortion clinics in the state. In a recent National Abortion Federation survey, 51 percent of clinics in areas that had enacted buffer zones reported a decrease in criminal activity after the zone was put in place, and 75 percent said it helped improve patients’ and staff members’ ability to access the clinic. Buffer zones have proven to be an effective measure in dealing with the decades-long problem of threats, obstruction, and violence outside of abortion clinics, while still protecting the free speech rights of abortion opponents.
