A Concord man is accused of throwing a woman against a wall and placing his hands around her neck to restrict her breathing in a domestic dispute in the city in late January.

Michael Murphy III, 25, faces two felony counts of domestic violence, one for domestic violence and the other alleging attempted strangulation. He is also charged with misdemeanor counts of simple assault and domestic violence.

Murphy recently waived his arraignment in Merrimack County Superior Court in Concord and is out of jail on personal recognizance. He is prohibited from having contact with the victim per a civil restraining order.

Concord police responded to a 911 call at an apartment on Manchester Street on Jan. 28 after a woman reported she’d just been choked by Murphy. On the scene, officers said they observed “red marks and minor scratches” on the woman’s neck and noted that the injuries appeared “very recent,” according to an affidavit prepared by Concord police Officer Steven Carter.

The woman told police Murphy began screamed and “got very angry” during a conversation about an ex-girlfriend, the affidavit says.

When speaking with officers at his apartment, Murphy said there was an argument but that the woman got physical with him first and slapped him in the face. He said he shoved the woman “away and against a wall in order to get her off of him,” Carter wrote.

Police said they did not observe any signs of injury to Murphy. He was taken into custody without incident.

The next hearing in Murphy’s case is scheduled for April 12 in Concord.
