Letter: Forgotten service

I am a retired Nashua police officer. I was injured in the line of duty and required to retire. This year the New Hampshire Retirement System and the state Legislature granted a $500, one-time payment to retirees with the following three requirements: 20 years of service, annual salary of $30,000 or less and more than five years in retirement. When a person is injured in the line of duty and required to retire, it’s impossible to put in 20 years. By doing this, the Legislature has totally forgotten about us first responders who were injured in the line of duty.

Without an increase for almost 10 years, that one-time payment means a lot to us. How sad we were forgotten about. Injury is not what we hope for, but it happens. Each day we put on our uniforms and go out not knowing if we will come home at the end of the day. This is done for all of you. Protect and serve. How sad that we are forgotten.
