Letter: Gardner’s neutrality is invaluable

Monday, December 03, 2018

I voted for Colin Van Ostern to be our governor, and he might make a decent U.S. senator someday. But if he wins his race for secretary of state, most Republicans will vote against him. He has campaigned for the job for months, raising more than $200,000, some of it from out-of-state donors.

If he wins, political leaders across the country will rightly see him as just another politician, and one elected by Democrats. He’ll have an uphill fight defending our first-in-the-nation presidential primary election from other states eager for that privilege.

Lawmakers of both parties should stand up for Bill Gardner, who has long earned their gratitude and respect. He has a huge advantage over Van Ostern in the crucial national debate: neutrality.
