Letter: Act on climate change instead of denying it

At 67, I hope to be around for many more years, long enough to watch my little ones grow up and take care of the Earth. If you’re a climate change denier, get real and sit up straight. Or, as Sen. Mazie Hirono from Hawaii said, “Just shut up and step up. Just do the right thing for a change.”

If all you’re doing is listening to someone name call and bluster, turn him off. Find print pictures of the melting of the Arctic and Greenland ice caps. Go to Hampton Beach and note how storm tides and king tides cover roads on a routine basis. Like that beach vacation in the Carolinas and Florida? Want to go hiking in Glacier National Park? Enjoy that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alaska? Go now, before the glaciers and beaches disappear.

Worried even just a little about the environment? As the president is trying to ease up on methane restrictions, states like Wyoming are clamping down. As he promises to rebuild the coal industry, permafrost melt in Alaska is releasing methane into the atmosphere.

Have kids, grandchildren? Don’t believe the facts? Ask them and their science teachers. Read Discover magazine. Look up the latest U.N. climate change report. Wonder why the president pulled out of the Paris climate change accord? So do I. Wouldn’t you rather your tax dollars went to saving your piece of the earth rather than destroying it? Got the picture? Believe in it. Go do something – now.
