Former Franklin Police Chief Bradley Haas, 63, was identified late Friday as the victim of a shooting inside the lobby of New Hampshire Hospital in Concord.

Haas, a New Hampshire Department of Safety Security Officer, was shot while working in the hospital’s front lobby entrance around 3:30 p.m Friday.

The identification of the shooter, who was killed at the scene by a State Trooper, has not been released.

State officials, including Attorney General John Formella, described Haas as a father and a law enforcement veteran. He worked in the Franklin Police Department for 28 years after serving three years as a military police officer in the U.S. Army. 

State officials said the shooter was immediately engaged by a New Hampshire State Police Trooper assigned to the hospital. Members of New Hampshire State Police, Concord Police, New Hampshire State Office Complex Police and Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting incident along with members of the Concord Fire Department.

They also said New Hampshire State Police have searched and cleared a suspicious box truck near the scene. They determined the truck poses no safety risk.

Autopsies are scheduled for Saturday in Concord at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Consistent with protocol, the name of the Trooper involved in the incident is being withheld pending the conclusion of a formal interview.

An update on the investigation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Incident Planning and Operations Center Media Room in Concord. Participants will include Attorney General John Formella, Gov. Chris Sununu, Safety Commissioner Robert Quinn, State Police Colonel Mark Hall, and HHS Commissioner Lori Weaver.
